Castle Caerlaverock, Scotland

This Medieval fortress near Dumfries was built in 1270, and what we see today are the remains of a 1640 siege — a lethal blow that ended Caerlaverock's nearly 400-year history of conflicts with England, and conflicts over religion. It is now a children's adventure park, and a nature trail.
