Italian painter Amedeo Clemente Modigliani 1884-1920

"He died in Paris of tubercular meningitis exacerbated by poverty,
overwork and addiction to alcohol and narcotics."
He really was a tortured artist.

Portrait of a beautiful woman

I came across this portrait and was mesmerized by the beauty of the subject and the technique of the artist. As a little girl I thought this is what sophisticated women looked like, but as an adult, one finds out it was just an illusion. The artist has captured a Barbie doll on canvas.

The Richat structure, Mauritania, Africa

This is a recent photo of a geologic formation in the Sahara Desert taken from the International Space Station 240 miles above the Earth.

Scientists say the origin of the circular structure is a mystery. It is 40 km in diameter.

Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers took the picture using a Nikon D2Xs camera. (Space.com)

I love snuff
and all its accoutrement.

Up for auction: a bronze snuff bottle with watch and barometer mounts, circa 1890; 3 inches high; has an estimated value of $40,000 to $60,000.

This is some high-end snuff stuff here:
