In the old sitcoms, I could never quite understand why the “housewife” was always so appreciative of a fur coat or a pearl necklace when she’d just spent the day trying to figure out how to buy groceries on a tight budget and ruined her hair with a home perm because the husband wouldn’t give her money to go to a salon. It always seemed ridiculous to me that he was in charge of all the money decisions and was the hero when he decided she could have something she knew they could or couldn’t afford.
