Dunnottar Castle ruins

 The only entrance

On Scotland's northeast coast, near Aberdeen, lies the ruins of the midieval Castle Dunnottar. Records indicate that a fortress was built on this site as early as 700 A.D. Most of the 11 buildings were constructed between the 12th and 17th Centuries. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here in 1562 when it was one of the strongest castles in Scotland. In 1651 the Scottish Crown Jewels were brought here for safekeeping, however, Cromwell besieged the castle the next year, in 1652. The castle was partly disassembled in 1718 and it fell into ruins. Today it is owned by a private family but is open to the public daily.
