The Richat structure, Mauritania, Africa

This is a recent photo of a geologic formation in the Sahara Desert taken from the International Space Station 240 miles above the Earth.

Scientists say the origin of the circular structure is a mystery. It is 40 km in diameter.

Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers took the picture using a Nikon D2Xs camera. (Space.com)
